+ Some Mad Hope thoughts

So, santa came early and brought my pre-order a day early...made my day!

After one listen, I had heard all the songs live before, except "Sooner Surrender" and "Falling Apart". It'll take me a little to get used to the studio version of all the songs he has been playing live because they're different. However I am floored by "Sooner Surrender". That song totally shocked me. And considering how much I already love the other songs on the album, that was just icing on the cake...

Sooner Surrender is a song that I have been praising the past few months as the best song Matt has written.

It seriously, is moving. A fantastic song.

I'll tell you what, I am surprised by this disc. When I first bought BTF I was astounded by how underestimated Matt is. Now after Some Mad Hope my point is driven home.

I'd have to say my favs are Wedding Dress and Bulletproof Weeks. He really shows the power of his voice in the latter.

I love all the songs equally, but I'm not gonna lie, "Falling Apart" wowed me when I saw the acoustic video on YouTube. The album version is now on the very short list of my favorite songs ever. Yum yum.

Every song seems to get stuck in my head at some point during the day... okay, except for "Car Crash" and "Come on Get Higher" because I've heard them both a billion times.

Argggh.

"Still." I didn't know why people requested that song at Borders. I'd only heard it once before. Now I wish I'd backed up their request. @#$%@! Also, "Gone" is up there among the songs I loooove. Okay, the entire frickin album. Wow. I just love it.

flaymNcolde - that's exactly how I feel. Obviously a lot of sarcasm in my post. I literally flip flop back and forth day to day as to what my favorite song is... soooo hard to choose

First off, I love the album. So let's understand that.

But after listening to the Bonus disc, I'm so blown away by the rawness (word?) of Gone and Sooner Surrender. I almost prefer the stripped down versions.

I give the album a 9/10, but the bonus disc is a 10/10. Gone is mind-blowing how good it is acoustic.

^ Ahh, yes, other people know how to phrase my thoughts better sometimes, haha.

Matt gets pretty drowned out on the album version of "Car Crash"... even the live recordings of this song are more "raw" and emotional. The computeryness of the disc track makes Matt kind of... well, fade into the background. There's none of the clarity. He doesn't "ring like a bell." The drums are pretty sweet, though.

I don't know. Maybe it's not necessarily that I had my hopes too high--just that my hopes were different from Matt's. Hmmm.

i hate to be a panzy but the more i listen to the album i agree with "everyone" here. Every song on this disc has a power of its own. They all take you somewhere different, it is like a journey that you hate to end.

Being the only song that I haven't heard yet, Sooner Surrender is my favorite song on the album. But obviously, half the songs on the album have been my favorite at one time or another from listening to them on YouTube, bootlegs, or from the Matt pre-release stuff. I always loved Car Crash since the first time I heard it acoustic (although the EP acoustic version is missing something). And Bulletproof Weeks is even awesomer with the piano after the first verse.

I do think the album is a bit overproduced. Car Crash doesn't need all the sound effect flair it has to sound good. The song is beautiful on it's own. Some of the songs have fills and guitar parts which really aren't necessary. Detroit Waves has some weird drum parts in the Bridge-ish section that throw off the sound. Wedding Dress is much better with the live outro rather than a fade-out. But overall I'm just being picky because I'd rather hear it stripped down and raw then with all the bells and whistles.

EDIT: I'd love to hear Aaron play the piano part on Bulletproof Weeks at a show, even if the plain acoustic version is pretty good already.

My favorite version of "Car Crash" ever: http://youtube.com/watch?v=J37tsH9uydg

I think the piano on "Bulletproof Weeks" is extremely well done, but it would only be flawless if I'd never heard the guitar-only performances.

falling apart is hands down my favorite from the album. i love them all, but i just thought the instrumentation and vocal mix on that track was so well done.

I'm going to agree with flaymNcolde and Shun. Detroit Waves and Car Crash seem to drown out Matt's vocals and sound very overproduced.

I've had a different song in my head after each listen. For days it was "Come On Get Higher" (which for me is the clear standout on the album) and other days it's been "Heartbreak World," and "Car Crash."

But lately I've been really digging "Sooner Surrender." Obviously it's got a great rhythm to it, good movement, great vocal delivery and good lyrics, but what I like best about it is, it never once sounds like Matt Nathanson.

To me it sounds most like a Ryan Adams or Toad the Wet Sprocket song.

Good album.
