"Best of.." live cd - derek 2009-04-29 15:28:44
I've decided its time to start compiling "best of" compilations of live, fan recordings of Matt's songs. Fans of many other artists do this and generally they are very well received. The little twist that we will be adding to this compilation is that Matt will be adding in audio commentary about some of the tracks. Like many things we do here your input and help with this project is greatly appreciated. So please use the comment link below to add in your suggestions of songs with links to the recording on archive.org. Obviously not all songs or versions can make the final compilation but some criteria we will be looking for are as follows:
Full credit will be given in a text file to those whom recommendations are used. So get out there, listen to shows, and give us your recommendations. |

+ I Can't Get To What You Need (10.14.08) I absolutely second the Alternative Transportation banter from the 10.12.07 show at Irving. It's PRICELESS. I also highly recommend "Wedding Dress" from that same show, it's hardcore. =) I'm also a huge fan of the recording of Come On Get Higher from Toad's PLace on 02.01.08 with the accompanying "An Anthem For Ice-Cream-Eaters" that went before it. It was Matt's attempt to explain the song to an all-ages audience, because there was a six-year old in the front row. And I don't know if there was anyone recording at the Nokia Times Square show this past October, but Matt did "Somewhere To Hide" and it was FANTASTIC if anyone's got it. It's worth hunting down. And then passing along to me, because I can't find it. =) This is a great idea, Derek. |

+ come on get higher also, that burlington vt show has a very VERY early version of come on get higher, played in a different key, different style, different lyrics, maybe it'd be kind of cool to have mr. nathanson comment on how the song has evolved into the smash hit that it has become. just a suggestion. |

+ best of moments I probably wouldn't put this on a CD, but it is quintessential Matt: Answering Machine: October 15, 2003, early show in Bryn Mawr. Aside from a good crowd, a siren from a fire truck provided a harmony for the last minute of the song. Matt's commentary was hilarious, and the siren sounds kind of cool. Speaking of sing alongs, Suspended might be a perfect way to close out the album if the crowd hits it right. I'd also go back to find some stuff with Matt Fish -- the cello adds so much. (First Time with an Anna Begins outtro on 4/25/03 is cool, but there's better.) Also, the old live versions of Wide Eyed and Full were amazingly intense. I haven't found a version that captures the energy to the extent that it should, but if you do, put it on! |

+ best of moments diana...sorry I didn't see this sooner. the posts on these news threads get hidden a bit once the news item floats down the page. derek and I are still working on this -- we haven't given up, but each just got a little bogged down with other things. the project is still alive though. |
